Online Computer Games and English Language Development Skills from Vocabularies Learning Aspect

Abstract

Nowadays, technologies have come to play crucial roles in people’s lives more than ever whether it is in terms of education, career, or from an entertainment perspective. Online computer games are a type of entertainment which is extremely popular today. The purposes of this study were: 1) to find out the effects of online computer games in relations to English language development from vocabulary learning aspect; and 2) to identify benefits of what considered as the most favorite online computer games. The samples comprised of 243 online computer games players. Data collection were done via online questionnaire and research findings showed online games contributed to improvement on English language development, in particularly in terms of the increase of new vocabulary learning. Correspondingly, the highest mean score was on the ‘increase of vocabulary bank’, followed by ‘an insight into vocabulary meaning’, and ‘new vocabulary recognition’, respectively. Moreover, the benefits of the most favorite online computer games include the support of vocabulary development as well as the familiarity with vocabulary relating to games.
